Steven and Marcella’s reception last weekend was energetic, unconventional, and a blast to DJ. Sesha Gaston and her crew at The Carolina Club was hard at work as usual decorating and getting ready when I arrived. The ceremony was in the divided ballroom, opposite of where I set up on the massive stage. Once the ceremony was completed, which they used an acoustic guitar for music, and walked in to “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi”, (Soo cool!) then the guests walked to the ballroom for cocktail hour.
I played a mix of Norah Jones, James Taylor, Billie Holiday and Jack Johnson while the guests mingled. Steven and Marcella wanted to join their guests for that hour, so we introduced them almost immediately to Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble”, a first for me! The Social Hour continues.
About an hour later, the Best Man and Matrons of Honor toasted the couple, then Steven and Marcella danced their first dance to “Nothing Can Change This Love” by the great Sam Cooke. (An Awesome first dance song!) The welcome speech was next by the Father of the Bride, followed by the blessing of the meal by Rev. Jim Fox.
After a delicious dinner to some soft rock, the natives began to get restless so I introduced the cake cutting to “Ho Hey” from the Lumineers, then the Bride/Father dance to “I Loved Her First” by Heartland, and the Groom/Mother dance to “How Sweet It Is”. Let me tell you about this dance. The Mother of the Groom, who had been walking around with the assistance of a cane all day to this point, hobbled to the dance floor and cooly let me know that she had a bad knee, was in pain, and would like to cut the song short. Of course that was no problem, because I would really hate for her to collapse right there on my dance floor with a bum knee! About 2 bars into the song, she starts laughing, hollers “JUST KIDDING” and begins dancing and twirling like nobody’s business! Obviously the guests were just as perplexed as I was, because they began to cheer her on! Such a cool moment! She totally pulled one over on everyone!
What a perfect way to open the dance floor!!! And these folks were there to party! And we jammed for the next 2 and 1/2 hours everything from The Temptations and Kenny Loggins to Montel Jordan, and the new Blurred Lines. This was a rocking party! They even brought the props from the Shutterbooth PhotoBooth over and danced with those!
We rounded the evening out to “Wagon Wheel” from Old Crow Medicine Show and that’s a wrap! I had so much fun with Marcella, Steven and their families and friends. The event was captured by an awesome photographers in Graham and Samantha Terhune and I can’t wait to see their work at this one. Other vendors were Sugarland for the cake and cupcakes and The Purple Puddle florist. We will post some of Graham’s photos as soon as we have them!
