Nothing matches the tradition of a military wedding. Typically held at a base or service academy chapel, this elegant ceremony is usually conducted by a military chaplain, although civilian clergy may assist. The ceremony includes dress uniforms, patriotic and military songs and decor, and of course, an archway of sabers or rifles. Receptions are held afterward at a base club or at a nearby event venue.
The chapel and chaplain are usually free of charge. The chaplain may require premarital counseling and may not allow photography during the ceremony. Base clubs are low-cost reception venue options, but they (like the chapel) book well in advance. If you’re having your reception off base in San Diego, be sure to inquire about a military discount.
Anyone serving, or has served, in any branch can have a military wedding. Current members, as well as veterans and retirees, can wear their dress uniforms. Grooms wear a full ceremonial dress while military brides have the choice of wearing their dress uniforms or wedding gowns. And since there’s a sword involved, the bride will stand on the right instead of the left.
Uniforms are not adorned with boutonnieres, but a military bride may still carry a bouquet. Uniformed groomsmen wear white gloves, with the exception of the groom and best man (so they can handle the ring). And all military grooms must be clean-shaven. Civilian grooms wear attire appropriate to the occasion.
Commissioned officers and their spouses depart the ceremony under an arch of sabers or swords, while non-commissioned officers and enlisted personnel are entitled to an arch of rifles. Provided by service members, the arch is a pledge of loyalty to the new couple by their “military family.” And a sword will appear during the reception for a refined and special cake cutting.
Military guests also wear their dress uniforms and the highest-ranking officers are honored with special places at both the ceremony and reception. With this type of traditional, formal wedding and its special military guests, be prepared for a receiving line.

DOES THE NAVY HAVE A BALL IN SAN DIEGO?
Both the Navy and the Marine Corps have significant installations in the area. Both branches have military balls that annually celebrate the founding of each branch. The Navy celebrates in October, while the Marines in November. Those who serve in the military receive an invitation. And each invitee may bring a guest. The balls are held at military bases, community centers, and hotel ballrooms.
WHAT MILITARY IS BASED IN SAN DIEGO?
The San Diego area is home to three Naval as well as three Marine Corps installations. Naval Base San Diego is home to the Pacific Fleet, while amphibious craft are located in Coronado and major commands are posted at Point Loma. The Marines are headquartered at Camp Pendleton, Air Station Miramar, and the Recruit Depot where over 21,000 soldiers are trained each year.
WHAT DO SOLDIERS AND THEIR GUESTS WEAR TO MILITARY BALLS?
These balls are important and elegant occasions. Service members wear dress blue or class A uniforms, their “dressiest”. Civilian men typically wear a suit and tie or even a tuxedo. Civilian women choose between long gowns or dresses no shorter than knee length. Some balls offer the often of cocktail attire, but you’ll want to keep the detailing to a minimum.
Note: COVID may postpone or cancel events, so follow local news and social media.
