• Just minutes from a modern downtown skyline, your guests will find Old Salem Museums and Gardens. This historic site tells the stories of the Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples of the area. The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts contains the finest collection of decorative arts made and used in the early American South. All-in-one tickets include self-guided tours of various venues, the Frank L. Horton Museum Center and the MESDA, and access to the Gardens of Old Salem.
• Winston-Salem is synonymous with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. Completed in 1917, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art was originally the home of Katharine Smith and RJ Reynolds. The 34,000 sq. ft. historic home includes over 6000 artifacts as well as a collection of artwork ranging from Georgia O’Keefe to Andy Warhol. And the Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University offer a 134-acre oasis with formal settings and tea gardens.
• If your guests like their history with a side of scary, arrange a walking ghost tour with Carolina History and Haunts. Take a 90-minute candlelight tour of the city’s historic West End District. Tours operate year-round and tickets need to be purchased in advance.
• Designated a “Runner Friendly Community” by the Road Runners Club of America, Winston-Salem’s downtown offers strolls, paths, and a greenway. Your guests will get some fresh air – and a fresh perspective of the city with the Winston-Salem Strollway and the Long Branch Trail. And serious runners can take advantage of the 20-mile Salem Greenway.
• These urban trails will take you to Innovation Quarter. This mixed-use hub of creative, innovative economic activity is home to Bailey Park. Enjoy lunch street-style from the rotating lineup of food trucks. This downtown park also plays host to a full calendar of community events, from movie nights to yoga sessions. And your guests will enjoy the outdoor art with striking murals and the 20’ tall triple helix sculpture.
• Two popular festivals held at Bailey Park are Gears and Guitars and the Juneteenth Festival. Known as the “biggest party on two wheels” the August Gears and Guitars is a three-day event of cycling races and free live music from big-name bands. The day-long Juneteenth Festival is a celebration of emancipation, African heritage, music, food, and crafts.
• Another popular downtown outdoor art installation can be found on Liberty Street between 6th and 7th. ARTivity on the Green is an art-themed park that expands the city’s Art District and connects it to Innovation Quarter. The “Tower Cloud” pays homage to the RJ Reynolds building which is now home to the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel. There are concerts at the bandstand and Sunday art festivals.
• If your guests are looking for one-of-a-kind pieces to add to their collections, be sure to direct them to the Piedmont Craftsmen Gallery, featuring nearly 400 artisans offering some of the finest crafts in the southeast. And the weekend before Thanksgiving marks the Piedmont Craftsmen Fair at the Benton Convention Center. Enjoy shopping for works from 100 vendors while viewing crafting techniques and speaking with the artisans.
• Film lovers also appreciate Winston-Salem. The RiverRun International Film Festival is one of the fastest-growing regional film festivals in the country. The festival showcases Academy Award-worthy films including narratives, documentaries, students, animated, and short films. USA Today calls RiverRun one of “10 amazing film festivals worth traveling for.”
